Position Overview

A well-established, mission-driven organization is seeking a Human Resources Director to lead and strengthen its HR function. This senior leadership role reports directly to executive leadership and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of human resources, including workforce strategy, compliance, employee relations, and organizational culture.

The Human Resources Director will act as a strategic partner to leadership while ensuring HR practices align with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and operational needs. This individual will lead HR initiatives, enhance systems and processes, and support a positive, high-performing workplace environment.

The ideal candidate is a strategic, hands-on leader with experience in fast-paced, service-oriented environments. Strong knowledge of California labor law, employee relations, and organizational development is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

Serve as the senior HR leader, advising executives on workforce strategy, organizational structure, and risk mitigation

Develop and implement scalable HR policies, systems, and best practices

Drive a positive and accountable workplace culture focused on retention and employee engagement

HR Operations

Oversee day-to-day HR functions including onboarding, offboarding, records management, and policy enforcement

Improve HR workflows, systems, and reporting for efficiency and compliance

Provide direction to HR staff and ensure consistency across operations

Employee Relations & Performance

Manage employee relations issues, investigations, and conflict resolution

Guide leadership on performance management, corrective actions, and workplace concerns

Support development of high-performing teams and leadership coaching

Compensation, Payroll & Benefits

Oversee payroll processes for accuracy and compliance

Manage benefits administration including health, retirement, and leave programs

Support compensation planning and workforce structure decisions

Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure compliance with federal, state (California), and local employment laws

Oversee audits, reporting, and regulatory requirements

Develop and maintain policies, handbooks, and SOPs

Identify and mitigate organizational risk related to HR practices

Education

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required

Master's degree preferred

Experience

7-10+ years of progressive HR experience, including leadership oversight

Strong background in employee relations, compliance, and HR operations

Experience in nonprofit, social services, healthcare, or other mission-driven environments strongly preferred

Experience with multi-site or program-based organizations is a plus

Skills & Knowledge

Expertise in California labor laws and HR compliance

Strong leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills

Proven ability to manage complex employee matters with discretion

Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach

High emotional intelligence and sound judgment

Certifications (Preferred)

SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR
